What Are Wool Biochar Pellets? A New Way to Build Healthier Soil

If you've spotted one of our billboards around Auckland recently, you might be wondering what Wool Biochar Pellets actually are.

You're not alone.

For many gardeners, biochar is still a new concept. But once you understand how it works, it's easy to see why gardeners and growers around the world are starting to add it to their soil.

At Sustaina Grow, we've taken that idea one step further by combining premium biochar with 100% New Zealand wool to create what we believe is the world's first Wool Biochar Pellet.

So, what is biochar?

Biochar is a stable form of carbon made by heating natural plant material in a low-oxygen environment. Rather than burning away, the carbon is captured and turned into a lightweight, porous material that can be added to the soil.

Those tiny pores act like millions of microscopic homes for beneficial soil microbes while also helping the soil hold onto water and nutrients.

Unlike compost, which naturally breaks down over time, biochar remains in the soil for many years, continuing to improve soil structure long after it's been applied.

Why combine biochar with wool?

This is where things get exciting.

New Zealand wool has incredible natural properties. It absorbs and slowly releases moisture, contains valuable nutrients, and breaks down gradually to feed the soil.

By combining wool with biochar, we've created a pellet that delivers multiple benefits in one easy-to-use product.

Our Wool Biochar Pellets can help:

  • Improve soil structure
  • Increase water retention
  • Support beneficial soil microbes
  • Slowly release nutrients as the wool breaks down
  • Encourage stronger root development
  • Lock carbon into the soil for the long term

Instead of relying on a single ingredient, you're giving your garden a combination designed to support healthy soil from several different angles.

Why healthy soil matters

Healthy gardens start below the surface.

When your soil holds moisture well, supports microbial life and has good structure, plants become more resilient. They cope better with dry periods, make better use of nutrients and often produce stronger, healthier growth.

That's why we believe gardening shouldn't start with the plant. It should start with the soil.

How do you use Wool Biochar Pellets?

Using the pellets couldn't be easier.

Simply sprinkle them around established plants or mix them into the soil before planting. As the wool gradually breaks down, it feeds the soil while the biochar continues working year after year.

They're suitable for vegetable gardens, flowers, shrubs, fruit trees, raised beds and pots.

Why we created them

At Sustaina Grow, we're always asking the same question:

How can we help gardeners grow more successfully while making better use of New Zealand's natural resources?

For decades, much of New Zealand's strong wool has struggled to find high-value uses.

At the same time, gardeners are looking for natural ways to improve their soil without relying solely on synthetic products.

Our Wool Biochar Pellets bring those two ideas together, combining an incredible New Zealand resource with a proven soil amendment to create something genuinely different.
